INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

3Dfx Voodoo3 Heatsink Removal

Voodoo3 3000 & Voodoo3 3500

A passive heat sink is pinned to the board. Release two brass pushpins by pushing them out of card holes, from the backside of the board. There is a weak adhesive tape holding the heatsink on the chipset after both pins are out, twist heat sink to release it from the chipset. Clean chip with rubbing alcohol to remove any residual adhesive left on chip. This will ensure the chip surface remains flat.

Voodoo3 2000

The passive heat sink on this card is glued to the chipset. Keep the card cold and gently pry up at the edge of sink to remove from chip. Use a single edge razor to clean off any excess glue left behind on chip. This will also ensure the chip surface remains flat.

Installation instructions for Stealth V3 Fighter - Cooler

  • Align the pushpins, which are on the cooler, with the holes on the V3 board.
  • Push the pins into the holes until the bottom of the pins split as shown in the picture.
  • Be sure the cooler is securely attached, and there is no space between the cooler and the chipset.
  • Proceed to install the card, connect the power cord to the power supplies or pass through with others (diskette drive, HDD, CD-ROM).
  • You are now ready to have FUN with Stealth V3 Fighter.

Hint: The cooler is attached with TennMax phase change thermal interface pad, no thermal compound is needed.  However in case your V3 chipset (plastic) is not very flat, you can apply a tiny amount of grease on the chipset then install the cooler on top of it. This may help to conform better to the concave plastic chipset and the performance may improve.  It is OK if you choose to replace the pad entirely, if you do not mind working with messy grease. (May 28, 1999)

Note (May, 2000): new versions of Voodoo3 card may not have the Push Pin holes. If your new Voodoo3 card do not have holes at the diagonal corners of the chipset, You then should choose Lasagna BGA Cooler Type 0 which uses special thermal adhesive to mount the cooler on the chipset. Of course you will need to clean the chipset surface with good solvent before install the Type 0 cooler.

Note (Sept. 2000): For Voodoo4 4500 AGP and PCI, use Type 0 Cooler
